About Gold, Cinema and Biodiversity in June 2010

After the César Ceremony in Paris, we found one more good reason to be in Montpellier in June 2010 (see previous news). The capital of Languedoc-Roussillon developed a partnership with The National Parc of Guyane - Parc Amazonien de Guyane, les Parc Nationaux de France (PNF), in order to develop project about biodiversity, especially with the Amazonian Greenhouse  - Serre amazonienne at Zoo of Lunaret. On 9th of June, the film L'Orpailleur (The Goldminer) de Marc Barrat will be on screen in France. The story is about the goldmining rush in French Guiana, and the impact on the environment and people. Many of us already know what goldmining means for the natural ecosystems, especially fauna and flora, biodiversity, not only in South America, but in many other tropical regions. Thus, no doubt that if you want to know more about the ecological impacts of goldmining (and hunting) on tropical fauna in many countries, you need to attend FSD2010 in Montpellier. Below a video of the Serre Amazonienne in Montpellier with frugivores and seed dispersers, currently threatened by goldmining in the Amazonian forest. Read the paper by Hammond et al. in Ambio (2007).
