African Elephant and Ivory : A Difficult Balance between Conservation, Development and Market

African Elephant is the frugivore of the month. Successively, within one week, Elephant conservation and International Ivory Market entered into a new conflict. First, EBay announced they were banning the sale of ivory products on their auction websites from next year in order to help protect African and Asian elephants. Then, an on-line published article in PLOsOne  by Blake et al. showed how Elephant foraging ecology is threatened by development, especially road construction to access mining projects in unprotected areas of the Congo basin,  with consequence for rainforest  diversity conservation. Finally, after a 10-yr ban period, Namibia sold more than 7 tons of Ivory to China and Japon, first sell of a 108 tons of Ivory from South Africa approved by CITES. Is there a way to trace legal and illegal Ivory, from Southern and Central Africa ? Apparently, yes. Read ScienceDaily
